Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Things you (never knew) you wanted to know!

If you haven't thought too much before now about having your mattress cleaned, you probably have a lot of questions. Here's some of things we often get asked but please call or email us to help with anything that may not be captured here.

What things have been found to be present in a typical mattress?

Irrespective of how well you clean you home, thanks to gravity the bed is a great place for dust and other particles to settle! Tests have shown all of the following things in a typical, domestic mattress.

Allergens: Dust mites, cat, dog and cockroach dander

Fungal Spores: Penicillium, Cladosporium, Alternaria and Aspergillus

Bacteria: Skin, oral, intestinal/fecal, genital, including Staphylococcus, Lactobacillus and Streptococcus

Skin Cells

Chemicals: Plasticisers, flame retardants, isocyanates

Food

Cosmetics

Sweat: Up to 26 gallons per year

Can I reduce or remove the build up of contaminants myself?

Absolutely – all of the following approaches will help reduce the build up of contaminants over time and are great ways to help maintain your Fresh Sleep Valet.

  • Cleaning your sheets regularly
  • Using mattress & pillow protectors
  • Vacuuming you mattress
  • Fresh Sleep probiotic spray

You can also find lots of DIY solutions online to integrate into your cleaning regime. We like this post by home revolution for an everyday cleaning solution. However nothing, even this, will prevent the build up entirely and so a regular deep clean is essential to keep things in check. In fact many home practices e.g. wetting or steaming the mattress will most likely make things worse by creating a humid environment for mould to grow. If in doubt give us a shout!

When is the best time to have my mattress cleaned?

How often should I have my mattress cleaned?

This really depends on your cleaning schedule and your sensitivity to allergies. We recommend between 6-12 months but you may want it more frequently if you are highly allergic or less if you follow a rigorous cleaning approach at home. Ultimately it is what makes you and your family most comfortable.

Why do I need my mattress cleaned? It is brand new and it doesn’t look dirty?

Unfortunately even a new mattress contains contaminants. Our bodies leave their traces from the very first time we sleep in our beds and whilst a newer mattress has a lower concentration of bacteria it is still contains a significant quantity.

If you are still in doubt - check out the pictures below. These are samples of the hidden dirt removed from a relatively new, unstained mattress.
